Gallery showings and free comic books...

So the last couple of days were fun. Friday night was the San Jose Gallery crawl. SLG has converted much of their office into a functional art gallery, and this month the art on display was created by Eric Jones. This is pretty well evidenced by his posing in front of the giant Supergirl banner with his name on it.

It was a good turn out.

There was art on the walls. Some of it even sold.

Amongst Eric's recent comics work were some of the reference illustrations he created last year for the Little Gloomy TV show that is in the works, and some of his more adult oriented content.

Then the next morning was Free Comic Book Day. Eric and I appeared with Jersey Gods writer Glen Brunswick at Flying Colors Comics in Concord. It was insane. The line threaded through every aisle of the store. It wrapped around the block. There was cake. there was pizza.

The only minus from the expereince was the last minute decision on the part of DC to cut Supergirl from the FCBD All-Ages Sampler. Supergirl had been slated for inclusion for most of a year, and we had looked very much forward to promoting the series. But with the book ending in a few days, I can understand why the decision was made. We still sold tons of Supergirl comics, mostly to kids. The turn out of tiny young girls interested in comics was awesome.

The crowd was so thick, it felt like a busy convention.

It was a hectic couple of days, but a fun couple of days.

SLG webstore sale!

SLG is having a 30% off sale. That means 30% off of everything, including previously marked down items. Here is a small selection of work available from Eric and myself through SLG. There is more. Much more. Click this link to see the entire list.

By the way, the first book on that list is a Gloomcookie trade. I didn't write that. I wrote an introduction which is why it comes up under  search  for my name. It's a great book by my good friend Serena Valentino. I highly recommend her work.

Before I continue, remember this important peice of information. You need to enter this code at the checkout to get your dicount:

taxtime09

So here's a small sampling of the loot:

Besides the multitude of comics work Eric and I have produced, there is also merchandise. Cheap merchandise. Before the 30% off, Carl and Mummy are only 5 bucks.

For those who only know my all-ages work, the X-Ray Comics trade paperbacks are very much NOT all ages. Tron skews adult. Little Gloomy and Super Scary Monster Show are all-ages.

So just so we are clear. Every issue of Tron: The ghost in the Machine is on sale. Every issue of The Super Scary Monster Show. Every issue of Little Gloomy. The first two issue of Supergirl. Both X-Ray Comics trade paperbacks. Two vinyl toys. A t-shirt. Not to mention everything else SLG has ever put out (that's in stock). Gargoyles. Haunted Mansion. The work of Jhonen Vasquez. The SLG work of Evan Dorkin. Everything.

So please, if you're familiar with one of our books, give another a try. SLG needs the money. Eric and I need the money. And more than that, we do these books because we want people to read them. If you're reading this site because of Supergirl, give Super Scary Monster Show a shot. It's very different, but different isn't always a bad thing.

Please help.

Via Evan Dorkin's blog, I just got word that long time SLG compatriot Scott Saavedra is suffering some serious health problems. Scott has been responsible for much of the graphic design behind my and Eric's various projects, and I believe our careers are better from his involvement.

Now, the comics industry is not exactly known for it's financial rewards or it's incredible safety net. So, to anyone who is able, please consider purchasing something from Scott's "Zazzle" site (see link below) or just donate something to help ease the burden.

Here's the link to Scott's blog.

Here's the link to Scott's Zazzle gallery featuring items he's designed.

And please, repost this. Pass it along to anyone you know who might be able to help.

Tron

Tron #6 in stores now.

Tron issue 6 is in stores now. I know this because I bought one. I bought one because Dan Vado of SLG openly hates me and won't come to any of my 17 different birthday parties this month.

Here's a picture of me with Tron #6.

Why am I reading this? I already know how it ends.

Birthday...

While it may not actually be my birthday quite yet, the timing seemed right for myself and Branwyn to combine forces into one mega birthday celebration. Unofficially, this celebration was entitled the Lan-Bran Birthday Bash 2008. I can't tell you what the official designation was. You don't have proper clearance.

It was held in the back room of Comic Relief in Berkeley. We had a projector, an XBox, Rock Band and a giant concrete wall, as seen here:

The picture doesn't really do it justice. Perspective is key here. That wall is far away from the people playing the make believe instruments.

Branwyn brought her Image Comics peeps to the event, I countered with crew from SLG. I've been wanting to incite a rumble between the two companies for some time now. Sadly, no rumbling occurred.

Eventually, Branwyn declared herself Supreme Ruler of Birthdays. As seen here:

She can call herself this if she wants. But in my mind she shall always be the Hambiggler.

In the end though, we all know what birthdays are about. The loot.

The loot is courtesy of Jose, Mike and Jef and Jennifer and Brian. Jennifer and Brian also thoughtfully attached a pirate eye patch to the gift bag, which I did not discover until I got home. I wish I had been more observant, as I would have worn it the entire evening.

Super Scary Monster Show

New book in stores.

We have new book out in stores today. I am surprised. I thought this book was a little ways off yet.

Because I am lazy, I have lifted this post from SLG. Please forgive my laziness.

Not Just Scary - Super-Scary!
The Super-Scary Monster Show from Amaze Ink

Amaze Ink, the all-ages imprint of SLG Publishing, is very pleased to announce the publication of a graphic novel that collects the adventures of your favorite spooky friends from Frightsylvania: The Super-Scary Monster Show Featuring Little Gloomy by Landry Walker and Eric Jones. Little Gloomy, the girl living in a world of horror; Frank the Monster, Larry the Werewolf, Mummy and Carl Cthulhu clash with aliens, fellow monsters and -- gasp! -- parents in the comic with the scariest setting, funniest stories and longest title of any comic book out there, The Super-Scary Monster Show Featuring Little Gloomy! The graphic novel collects all of the Amaze Ink Super-Scary stories, plus stories that appeared in Disney Adventures magazine and an all-new adventure with a neighbor who seems suspiciously familiar.

The Super-Scary Monster Show is a 104-page graphic novel, retailing for $9.95. It is available now from bookstores, comic stores and at SLG Publishing's website, www.slgcomic.com. A preview of The Super-Scary Monster Show is also available for viewing there.
